IRS Form 8949 Reconciliation & CSV Export

RealizeAlpha provides automated IRS Form 8949 & Schedule D Reconciliation to help investors reconcile closed capital asset dispositions, track wash sale disallowance codes (W), calculate net taxable capital gains, and export IRS-compliant CSV reports directly to tax preparation platforms (e.g. TurboTax, TaxAct, CPA spreadsheets).

Overview

IRS Form 8949 (Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets) is filed alongside Schedule D (Form 1040) to report capital gains and losses from stocks, options, and other covered securities.

The reconciliation engine in TaxOptimizationService:

  1. Aggregates executed sell orders across equities and closed options contracts.
  2. Evaluates holding periods based on trade execution dates to categorize transactions into Part I (Short-Term) or Part II (Long-Term).
  3. Cross-references transactions with the Rolling 30-Day Wash Sale Window Tracker. When a loss is disallowed under IRS Section 1091, adjustment code W is attached and the disallowed loss is added back into Column (g).
  4. Reconciles net gain or loss per IRS instructions: Column (h) = (d) Proceeds - (e) Cost Basis + (g) Adjustment.
  5. Exports a standardized RFC 4180 CSV with Part I and Part II sections, subtotal lines (Form 8949 Lines 2 and 4), and grand totals for Schedule D (Lines 1b and 8b).
